Are implants safe?  How many years can it be used?

Implant treatment is a safe and very successful treatment if done correctly. It functions in a way that mimics the natural tooth structure. If it is properly cared for by the patients, you can use it as smoothly as a normal tooth. How long you can use the implants in a healthy way depends entirely on your oral care and not interrupting your doctor visits. If your oral care is not good, infection may develop, just as with normal teeth, and this may cause complaints such as bleeding, pain and so on. All these problems are problems that you may encounter with your normal teeth. If your oral care is good after you have an implant and the combination of the implant with the bone is good, you can safely use these implants for many years. As with other implants placed in our body, the service life of these implants depends on many factors and it is not correct to say such a thing as a lifetime warranty. 


I already have my own teeth in my mouth. Is it still possible to have an implant?

Implants can be applied in different options, including single and multiple. In some patients, only one tooth is missing in the mouth and this gap can be filled with an implant. In some patients, there are almost no teeth in the mouth. In this case, whole mouth implant treatment can be applied in suitable patients.


Can an implant be made for every tooth?

After the implant is made, the most important point is whether the implant is well combined with the jawbone. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate whether the bone volume of the area to be made is sufficient before the implant is made. If there is enough healthy bone tissue for the implant to be placed, the implant can be made.


Does it hurt a lot while implanting?

Placing an implant is often a simpler procedure than pulling a tooth and is usually done under local anaesthesia. You will not feel pain during the procedure, but you may have mild pain in the first week after the procedure. After the implant is made, you should use the drugs given by your doctor correctly so that you do not have pain.
 

How long does the implant process take?

Before treatment begins, your doctor will inform you about how long it will take. It may take longer or shorter depending on the area where the implant will be made. The screw part that will hold the implant in your jaw is placed first. Sometimes, the superstructure can be placed at the same time as the implant infrastructure. However, placing the infrastructure and superstructure at the same time is not a suitable method for everyone. In most patients, screws are placed first, and the superstructure of the implant is placed after the screws are fully combined with the bone (approximately 3-4 months). This process varies from patient to patient. It may take a shorter time in some patients, and it may take longer in some harvests.


What should I pay attention to after the implant is made?

After the infrastructure of the implant is placed, the bones are expected to join and fuse with these titanium screws. This process usually takes several months. In some patients, this process takes a shorter time and the superstructure can be fitted earlier. If two or more teeth will be implanted, you can use a temporary prosthesis in this process. If you are already using a temporary prosthesis, you can continue to use these prostheses until the infrastructures of the implants are fully settled. When the infrastructure of the implant is placed, the shape of that area will also change. Therefore, your doctor will inform you about the necessary procedures to reshape the prostheses you are currently using so that they do not damage the implant area.


Are implants more difficult to clean than normal teeth?

There is no difference between implants and normal teeth in terms of cleanliness. However, in order for an implant to be used more healthily and for a longer period of time, it needs to be taken care of very well. Your dentist will give you the necessary training on how to clean. Implants may have areas that you will have difficulty in cleaning, as in normal teeth. You may need to use other cleaning instruments for these. In these cases, the necessary information will be given to you by your dentist.


If I have gum disease before I have an implant, will this continue when I have an implant?

If you do not pay attention to your treatment after the implant, you may experience gum disease again. Smoking affects the gums and the health of the implant due to the chemicals and toxic effects in it. Therefore, implant application is generally not preferred in smokers. 


Are implants removed at bedtime?

Most implants are fixed and can only be removed by dentists. However, in some cases, there are also implants in the form of prostheses that patients can remove. Most of the implants are fixed in the mouth and look like your normal teeth. 


Will it be obvious that I have an implant?

Implants made thanks to new technologies are almost unnoticeable from the outside. Your doctor will plan the implant in a way that will look natural suitable for your mouth structure, and since the superstructure is suitable for your other teeth, it will not be obvious that you have implanted.


One screw for every missing tooth in the mouth?

If you only have one tooth missing then a screw must be installed for a single tooth. If more than one tooth is missing side by side and the bone structure is suitable for this, your doctor can implant you using less infrastructure for more than one tooth. This is a situation that completely varies from patient to patient. 


What happens if I have an accident after having an implant?

If you have an accident, implants can be damaged, just like normal teeth. Therefore, if you are doing sports, you need to be careful that your mouth area does not get hit. If only the superstructure, that is, the tooth part, is damaged, the tooth can be replaced alone without touching the infrastructure of the implant. If the infrastructure of the implant is damaged, it can be removed or left in the jawbone to avoid further damage. This decision will be made by looking at the patient's clinic.

 

What happens if the implant does not fuse with the jawbone?

This condition is very rare and usually manifests itself during the healing process or immediately after the implant is placed. In such a case, the infrastructure of the implant is removed and the bone is left to heal. After the jawbone heals, re-implantation can be applied to this area. If the implant is not desired, then bridge treatment can be performed.
